This blog offers an insight into my aspirations, inspirations, concepts, materials, methods, thoughts and outcomes.I approach textiles in a drawing and painterly way pushing the boundaries of traditional fine art practice always aiming to produce something important, inspiring and thought provoking. "The nature of the truly creative is rebellion-against what has been, against habit, the norm, our stamina and the limitation of the 'known'. Art is a quest...it is a path to the unknown". | Maria Holohan My Elizabeth. 2011 Mixed media, embroidery and appliqie on vintage fabric |
I approach textiles in a drawing and painterly way never planning what the outcome will be allowing my intuition and spontaneity take me to the next level. It is now time to critically analyse what i have done, so here are some words and sentences to begin that process;
Exploring conventions of femininity through stitching into vintage fabric.
Mixed media trapped in acetate
Embroidered over/outside
female form
Constructed
Intuitive and spontaneous approach
Found canvas
Fabric tells a story
Narrative
Contemporary
Ambiguous
Communication
Complex thought patterns
Identity
As the viewer what can you decipher from My Elizabeth?

As a contributor I am very happy to announce that Re-enchantment is now LIVE!
Re-enchantment is an immersive journey into the hidden meanings of fairy tales. Presented as an interactive multi-platform documentary project, it explores why fairy stories continue to enchant, entertain, fascinate and horrify contemporary adult audiences.
Explore the enchanted forest and discover the hidden meanings of fairy tales by visiting www.abc.net.au/re-enchantment.
My contributions are Cinderella and The Fairy Godmother from The Mental Fairy Tale Series - further images from the series can be viewed at the websites on my profile.

BECOMING ART
Artist Lynette Thomas from Artkore Photography (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Artkore-Photography/301339831949) had the idea to "bring my dolls to life in my studio".
The photo's are an exciting starting point for a new body of work Becoming Art. Studies will begin with drawing on board with mixed media developing into larger works - I envisage a series of self portraits in a variety of mediums that are largely confessional.

Substance - Contemporary Textiles Exhibition
18th - 28th May 2011
Opening night Saturday 21st May at 6pm
The Post Modern Gallery, Theatre Square, Swindon, SN1 1QN.
I am organising and participating in SUBSTANCE; a curated group show seeking to capture the essence of an important 20th Century female figure.
The exhibition will provide innovative, colourful art that explores pattern and surface quality considering the historical and social aspects of textiles by using a diverse range of contemporary materials such as wire, wood, metal and paint alongside stitch, cloth, knitting, weaving and lace work.
The aim is to reveal a sense of self and Identity finding connections between the tactile and touching quality of textiles to express emotion.
The intention of SUBSTANCE is to highlight the importance of textile art and promote local artists.
